Meet Our Scientific Farmer - Dr. Steve Collins

Who is Dr. Steve Collins?

I am a medical doctor with a clinical doctorate in nutrition and an honorary doctorate in science, all earned through my research into the diagnosis and treatment of nutritional disorders.

Nutritional Experience

My life’s work has been dedicated to helping people improve their nutritional status, and I bring 35 years of practical experience in treating and researching malnutrition across the developing world to PhyterBerry Aronia.

In the 2000s, I developed a community-based delivery model for treating starvation, which has become the gold standard for humanitarian interventions worldwide.  This work led the UN and many governments in developing countries to change their policies on managing malnutrition

Throughout my career, I have seen the power of nutrition to heal - or, conversely, to cause disease. I have been privileged to help hundreds of thousands of people back to good health, all through the provision of proper nutrition.

Given this firsthand experience, I find it painful that so many people still suffer from poor health and die prematurely due to what and how they eat. I know that much of this suffering could be easily avoided with small, practical changes.

Understanding the Science Behind PhyterBerry Aronia

Through these articles, I will draw on my experiences and the latest nutritional research to shed light on key aspects of modern nutritional thinking and to explain the science behind PhyterBerry’s range of aronia products.

I will look at the concept of metabolic health, a cornerstone for understanding how nutrition affects overall health. From there, I’ll cover the basics of major dietary components such as carbohydrates, fats, and fibre, before exploring the critical role of the gut microbiome. I will also touch on what happens in the body after eating and during fasting, along with an overview of the physiology of weight loss.

Additionally, I will highlight the importance of phytonutrients and polyphenols, describing some of the ways these compounds enhance health and longevity.

While I draw heavily on published, peer-reviewed scientific studies and will provide references over time, these discussions necessarily simplify the intricate processes involved in nutrition and metabolism. Please take these posts as an accessible introduction rather than a definitive account of this complex subject.

I do not plan to list specific foods rich in various nutrients, as this information is readily available elsewhere. Instead, my goal is to explain why certain foods are healthy and others are not. By clarifying some nutritional fundamentals and the reasoning behind recent shifts in dietary advice, I hope to rebuild trust in nutritional science and its ability to offer practical guidance that promotes long-term health and vitality.

Simple Changes to Your Diet Make a Big Impact

My aim is to highlight straightforward, achievable changes in nutrition and lifestyle - approaches that don’t require drastic sacrifices but can lead to dramatic improvements in health and energy. After years of being sold the ineffective and difficult calorie-restriction model of healthy eating, you may be surprised by how easy and effective small changes based on modern nutritional thinking can be.

In time, for those who wish to delve deeper, I will share additional articles that expand on the topics introduced here, along with the academic references I’ve drawn upon.
